I asked this question at Self Concept and was very surprised at the choice people voted so let see the view of a larger audience. Give the choice on the poll what do you think is the most important aspects of design? And Why? I know that they're all very important but which one triumph over others? |

It's kind of hard for me to decide, I'm torn between originality/creativity and craftsmanship/appearance. Both are kind of expected nowadays in the graphic community. I think it's important to really define who you are in your art, and that takes more originality of course. Originality gets my vote. |

Like I said at Self Concept, having fun. If you don't enjoy design, the rest are completely useless. Besides, I think most of the different "aspects" of design are equal. They all play a major part, but none are completely necessary all the time, and so none of them can be considered greater than each other. Without the fun, or at least some sort of pleasure, design is empty.

Depends on what you're designing. ![]() But for design in general, I think having a firm understanding and enjoyment of what you're doing is the most important thing.

I voted for Appearance. To me, if it doesn't look appealing to anybody, then nobody will appreciate it and one of the fundamental aspects of design is that the work needs to be appreciated in some way. Obviously, different things appeal to different people though, so that's probably one of the most broad characteristics of design too. |

I concur with Steve and say that appearance is perhaps the most important aspect. If it is visually appealing and pleasing, then you will be satisfied and content with what you created. You'll be happy that you've created it. The intrinsic value is in creating something that others will find beautiful. |

I'd say it's the idea. For something to work as a piece of design, you need to get a message across to the viewer(s) and IMO without a good idea, that's impossible. |

I voted for Craftmanship/Appearance/Look. The object of most designs is for it to look good, whether for yourself or for someone else. If you don't like the look of it, then it really isn't that useful. |

Agreed. I always feel that the concept, or idea, behind the design is the most important aspect. Without a solid, well thought out concept, the design or art itself may not convey what the artist had in mind. You can create art just for the sake of creating art (without a plan, purpose, or direction in mind), but I wouldn't call that designing...that is moreso practicing or enhancing your skills. Although, I do think that all of your choices, Tue, are interrelated and all need to be important to the designer in order for a design to be successful, interesting, or groundbreaking. |

I personally think the level of importance depends on what type of designer you are but I'm leaning toward the idea/concept more. For a lot of amateur designer or people that do graphic for fun, the appearance will probably be their most important thing because they want to wow everyone. However, if you are going into the professional world, the idea and concept of the design is far more important. It's the concept that drives the design. A good example is the new Walmart identity, it's a simple ubiquitous star symbol (though it does looks better than their old blocky and patriotic color identity). But what makes that simple design works is that it the idea behind it. The concepts of the startbust is friendly, inviting and it represent the evolution of Walmart through time. Another example is the Apple's logo. It's a simple shape of an apple that got bit off with no appealing color like their previous one (the fruity colors one). Why did they change it from the colors one then? Because it reflects the concept of their products which is simple, sleek and clean. |

Concept and originality. It can look amazing but if I've seen the same shit 100 times before and it has no meaning, it isn't going to impress me. This goes for digital art obviously, as it's nearly impossible to create web graphics and templates based on a concept and be original at the same time. It just isn't the point of that form of digital media.

i agree. if it doesn't look good, then people aren't gonna give a shit about the message it conveys or the ideas behind it. |

functionality. It doesn't matter how good something is if you can't use it. That goes for anything. First make it work, then build on pleasantries. Also, I think it would be good to keep in mind that designing and art are two compleatly different things. Also designing is a lot more then web design. I bet when you're out in -30 weather, and you see someone frost-bitten to death, and you're warm with your shit-ugly jacket, you'd be pretty damn happy about the functionality of it. So I think appearance is just a plus to have, but by far not the most important by any means. edit: I'd also almost go as far as to say it is pretty much the most important aspect, by definition. Design often refers to the plan, and well, say you make a plan to make something. You go to make it, but don't follow the plan. Your.. thing, sucks. It doesn't work. It looks faboulous. Is it good? no Edited by lightsilver, Jan 17 2009, 04:09 AM.

my lecturers tell me "you can design the most stunning piece of art, but without a story/idea/concept behind it, no one will understand anyway." I suppose you need to know how to sell your design in today's competitive world. |

All of them are equally important imo. But if I had to choose one it would be Craftsmanship and appearance.

I voted for Craftmanship/Appearance/Look. But as some others have stated, your poll selections are all important to design. I get where those of you who voted for Concept/Idea are coming from and I agree to a point. But in my own case, I find that while I sometimes have a good concept, I often lack the craftmanship to pull the idea off. Generally when I admire the work of others, the design has all these elements to it. It's clever or new but everything happening in the signature or theme/skin all work together and complement each other to make a pleasing whole.

Design? Like web design and such? Craftsmanship. The originality finds its way in naturally, but it doesn't really matter. "Design" infers trying for functionality, doesn't it?![]() That's my answer for art. Design and originality are tied for second place, though. Edited by Tarshark, Feb 26 2009, 03:46 AM.
