After seeing it succeed on other forums, I wondered if it'd be worth discussing, and even potentially trialling here at the Theme Zone. I've always viewed it as a nice member incentive to become that 'active valid member' rather than just the 'active member', and it's always nice to be recognized for your efforts. I think it'd be something nice and fresh for the TZ (though, I can't recall any such reward existing in the past here). Just thought I'd put it forward. Would love to see it added here. Oh, and of course, there's always the weekly and fortnightly option available if the monthly option is not the best choice. |

Like any other idea, there are some pros and cons to a "Member of the Month" feature on the TZ. It works for most boards because generally they're not as big as the TZ. The issue I can see coming up is that people would start arguing and fighting over the spot, complaining when someone else gets it, etc. If you think everyone on this board can be mature about a MOTM feature, then I personally don't see an issue in adding it. But there's probably a good amount of debating left on this subject before we get an answer. |

Oh, I definitely agree. These days, such features as the 'Member of the Month' fall through or collapse when a band of members complain about it, and attack the requirements and/or the method itself on how the member is decided upon. If these factors are covered appropriately, then it should;d work out fine - members wouldn't be able to challenge or argue a decision if there's guidelines to support the decision (so-to-speak). |

Perhaps due to ZBTZ's size, have a main Member Of The Month award, then a batch of smaller awards, like Skinner Of The Month and whatnot. Gives a broader range of awards to aim for given the size of the community.

That sounds more appropriate, but my only concern with that would be that a particular category (say for example that of the 'skinner of the month') may run out of possible candidates after a few months. |

ZBTZ's size? Yeah because the entire database will be active for a month.. Your lucky to have at least 20 members a day on this board.. |

The amount of active members at one time is not indicative of how many members are online all throughout a day. Every 2 or 3 hours I'm pretty sure 90% of any given set of online people will have changed significantly. |

Same with the amount over a course of 30 days. The same 20 people won't be on 24/7 for the whole month.

I find the MOTM award sort of redundant, a second-rate award next to an elite or staff promotion. Any member who would "complain" about not getting an award such as this would have likely not deserved it in the first place. I can't see any significance it can pose but hey, anything for the dedicated members, you deserve it. |

That's because, unlike other boards, it's "users online in the past 15 minutes" - not 45 mins or hours. And how exactly would this make the entire "database" - as you call it - active for a month? Because there's a motm? 1. That's not how it works. 2. That really won't do anything but get people bickering about not being picked and even complaining about the ones that did get picked. As soon as school is finished and stress is relieved, both staff and members will have more times on their hands to visit the TZ and do what they do. Most people during this time have finals so it's only predictable that the TZ is not as active as people would like it to be. But, going back to the original idea - I can't honestly say this would work. Like mentioned before by both me and others, arguments will from this and we might actually lose members because they might get too pissed. Instead of members of the month and such, maybe think about things like themes of the month, graphics of the month...just to throw that out there. |

Themes and Graphics of the Month does sound like a good idea...and it ties in with the TZ idea better. |

Our alternative to 'member of the month' type things has always been the Elite Members group, which praises longevity of contributions. As for highlighting certain themes and graphics, we've looked at that, but currently don't have an ideal setup for it. |

That's why I'm suggesting the idea. It seems that the only member-based rewards system for continued dedication and such (excluding Elite Members) is that of Request Assistants - which is fine, but I thought a Member of the Month competition would offer an alternative to members who don't have an interest in design. In concerns to your comment Locke, has their been any possibility into incorporating a program that is based over a shorter period? Edited by Kuzco, Jun 7 2009, 11:42 PM.

I know, read Locke's post before posting but from what I understood, Kuzco is talking about a shorter time period for his original idea. |

I didn't mean shorter than the original Member of the Month idea - I meant in comparison to the Elite Membership program. It takes years for a dedicated member to work themselves up to such a rank. Sure, it's a good way to reward the true committed members for their contributions and efforts, but I thought introducing a system with lower expectations to achieve it would further motivate members to continue being an active part of the community. |

Actually, if your active in the community, it doesn't take a long time at all and definitely not years. The problem with the group is that people who are just about to be put on that group either stop visiting the TZ or stop being active which puts their "reward" on hold. I can honestly say, if you regularly post on the TZ and contribute, being put into the elite group will come very soon. |

It's definitely re-assuring to hear that, but it seems quite hard to believe that with that being said, only two members have made it into the group within the past few months. Regardless, though, it is pleasing to hear that
