So now that Michael Jackson has died, I've noticed something pretty funny.

All of a sudden everyone and the media is on his side, when a year ago, the only story on the news that included him was how much of a freak he was or how he allegedly molested children.

Before he died, so many people made MJ jokes that they weren't even funny anymore.. Everyone thought he was a freak and now that he's dead it's "oh what a legend"

Just thought I'd throw that out there. Another case of how hypocritical and dumb Americans are.

To be honest, I did used to do this. But it was long ago. Around when I was 15, 4 years ago I would make jokes like, "Dude how do you like Michael Jackson? He's like a pedo" until of course I actually listened to his music. And I thought they were decent, even if It wasn't my type of music, and ever since I did, I stopped those hypocritical jokes.

Well I can't speak for other countries, because I kind of live in America. I don't KNOW if this kind of hypocrisy about MJ is present anywhere else because I watch American TV and I'm around AMERICANS.

This happens around the world with several celebrities. It isn't limited to Michael Jackson or America, which is what I was pointing out.

I don't think this should have the title "Americans" which is stating that all Americans think like that. Pretty much, the only ones that think like that are the ones that a)never listen(ed) to his music and b)go with whatever everyone else says.

In the end, he did as much charity work as he could and his music will be remembered for ages.

I think everyone has made at least one joke about Michael Jackson in the past, even me and I'm sure it's not exclusively in the US :P . I guess its just when he died, and all the things that we've learned from documentary's as of late that we can really appreciate his music and how much of an icon he really was and will be for a very long time to come.

I think you're confusing hypocrisy with respect. Would you rather the news networks go around saying "Finally, we're rid of that weirdo pedophile." ?

The same thing is happening about Billy Mays. I hated his commercials, as did a lot of other people I know, and now I'm seeing a lot of comments about how much people enjoyed his commercials.

You are generalizing that everybody in America feels that Michael Jackson was a legend or that everybody in America feels that he was a child molester. In reality on the other hand. American citizens cannot control what the media publishes. The media gets the stories that they believe will get the majority to care about. I feel that Michael Jackson was falsely accused so families could get money. Yes, all of the plastic surgery he has acquired makes him a freak in my eyes because he cannot deal with how his genes made his appearance. Yes, i still repect him, he was a phenomenal artist and invented the 'Moon Walk'. But please don't come onto this forum board to trash my country like this, i don't trash other countries and say that they are less because the media precedes a few wrongs within that country.

I still hear MJ jokes about his death. Like the death being caused by eating 12 year old nuts, etc. However everyone before his death recognized that he WAS a living legend.

He made Thriller for goodness sakes.

It's both a sign of respect for the dead and the fact that he IS an icon in the music industry. He's probably being loved for what he contributed within the music industry and how he WAS before the downfall of his career because of the case

Exactly, just like how Elvis is remembered for the good days of his career, and not the bad days.

I also found it ironic that he was sort of shunned before his death and was being hailed afterwards. But like others have stated in this topic, I think people are choosing to honor his memory by recognizing his musical achievements. Will I forget that Michael Jackson was accused of child molestation? No. But even though I'm not a fan of his music, I would have to agree he sold a lot of records and was a big part of music history.

Well, I honestly do think he was kind of creepish, based on his looks, actions, beliefs/ideas, etc. No offense to any fans, they didnt do that to him.

But...why would anyone want to remember any dead person for the bad things they did rather than the good? MJ was a huge pop star, and he was a good performer as well. I'll admit that the Moonwalk is amazing, and his singing was okay, I guess.

Seeing the way his body changed from early fame to death is sort of...scary.

Pedophile > Legend
