I really think no one should be sued here as everyone is just doing their best to improve their own company. I don't like Bing but since Microsoft made it, they could do anything with it to improve their products or development. Google on the other hand pays YouTube and since they kinda own it already, they could also do whatever with it, to improve it and such. |

Anti-Trust laws are there to prevent companies from getting too big, taking advantage of smaller companies, and destroying them through unfair competition. During the Late 1800s to the Mid 1900s, AT&T held a monopoly on telephone service in the United States. Why is this bad? Because they were able to give out crap service, and charge royally for it. Companies are there to make money, and nothing else. Monopolies are bad for the consumer, because they get crap, and charged royally for it. Do you honestly think that its fair for people to do anti-competitive and unfair practices such as these? Microsoft paid stores to not sell their competitors in the nineties, and this eventually, with the culmination of other bad practices, led to the anti-trust suit "United States v. Microsoft". Do you think that's fair? ![]() When a company monopolizes and does anti-competitive practices, they kill smaller businesses, which causes many people to lose their jobs, which in turn results in people going home empty handed to hungry families.

If they do this H.256 thing, they're basically forcing people who use other browsers such as Firefox or Internet Explorer to use Google Chrome in order to use Youtube. Which really, shouldn't be done. That's what it seems like to me, anyway. Edited by Smkiller, Jul 4 2009, 12:01 AM.

I'm leaning to agree with this. I see where the monopoly is coming in, but compared to the other massive events Grant A. has mentioned, I don't think this is that big of a deal. And it's not like the consumers are getting any sort of crap service in this whole Youtube/Microsoft chain of events. The video quality, if I understand, is much better quality. Bing isn't too bad also, even if I'd rather use Google. |

Actually, Google was originally going to use Ogg Theora as its replacement to Flash, but they ended up using h.264. Ogg Theora and h.264 have the same video quality, but Ogg Theora is unencumbered by patents, and therefore can be used in all web browsers. It's pretty obvious that this is a direct attempt to convert users. Edited by Grant A., Jul 4 2009, 02:36 AM.

Same. Seems pretty outrageous but it's a very, very smart move for the company, but for the users not so much.. |

Can't really call it a monopoly since Safari can also display h.256. Obviously it is outrageous but they kinda do what they want with it. What really irks me is bing. It is a horrible search engine. I tried it out and immediately disliked it, and it takes up way too much room in IE (when I have to use IE for various things). Who in the hell has TV advertisements for a search engine anyway? Microsoft, of course. |

I honestly think Bing shouldn't be used. Google's always been there for us, and now there's Bing, and we switch to Bing as if Google wasn't anything important. Bing = Fail. Google = Win. Besides, Google is already well known around the world. Bing isn't. That's why they need advertising, besides. It's from Microsoft. And they can afford it. Edited by LightFire., Jul 4 2009, 01:34 AM.

So what? If I were to create something new, I'd want as many users to convert and use my service. |

I can't really see why Google would go with this as they'd lose a shit ton of traffic from all kinds of browsers that can't support it. People still use IE, why would they feel the need to switch to Chrome? |
Will I ever see you again?

Uhm... using h.264 would make less people able to use their service, because not all browsers can support h.264. The fact is that they are using their monopoly on the video hosting to try and convert users to Chrome. It's a very cheap tactic, it's monopoly abuse, and it's anti-competitive! Moreover, the biggest problem is Google's EULA. In the original Chrome EULA, it said that Google had the rights to anything transmitted to the Internet via Chrome. Now, imagine if Google had Firefox's marketshare and implemented that.
