Mobile Themes by Cory

Tutorial author: Cory
Tutorial Topic: Mobile Themes
Date Submitted:Sep 16, 2011

Cory posted his Mobile Themes tutorial in September without much fanfare, but I think it offers something revolutionary in enhancing the activity of message board communities. It is projected that by 2013, mobile phones will overtake PCs as the most common Web access device worldwide. To survive, web communities will need to accommodate this trend.

When designing a mobile theme, these are some things to keep in mind:

  • Mobile Web users are typically prepared to make fewer clicks on a website than users accessing sites from a PC. Try to simplify navigation.
  • Mobile users prefer not to scroll or have to wade through bloated content, so omit or collapse forum descriptions. Minimizing other non-critical content on the index is something to consider.
  • Many big images mean longer loading times. Consider reducing or eliminating non-essential images from the mobile version
  • As mobile screens are so much smaller than monitors, consider streamlining layouts and increasing font sizes.
  • Set up reply boxes to fill the screen, taking advantage of all available screen real estate to facilitate text input.

A look at ZNR's Cool Mint mobile version:

Something I dislike about the current ZNR mobile theme is the fact that it kicks off the most recent post information per forum and doesn't allow you to see it unless you enter in to that forum first. It kind of makes the index a bit static since you can't see what just happened or when it happened. I do like that it automatically detects that I'm mobile though. :)

I really like the idea of leaving out the forum descriptions since a majority of the people viewing your forum in a mobile browser probably know what most sections do anyway. I think I'll use that in my mobile theme. :)

I'm quite curious- are there any pre-existing mobile themes? c: I don't have much skinning experience, so premade skins are the only way I can do things.

I love the idea of minimizing descriptions, too! If only there were a code to do it- I would hate to remove them for all the skins, but I don't think it's possible for them to show up selectively...is it? OxO
